Myanmar Set Up Monitoring Committees Rohingya



A32NEWS - The Myanmar government will establish a national committee to investigate allegations of human rights violations and humanitarian crisis against ethnic Rohingya in Rakhine state.

The move comes amid international pressure due to the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Rakhine state located in northern Myanmar, reported Voice of America on Monday (28/11/2016).

Advisor countries and Myanmar democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has faced mounting criticism over the failure to tackle the violence.

While military action against ethnic Rohingya minority have resulted in tens of thousands of people displaced or fled from Myanmar. However, Myanmar has denied the violence against ethnic minorities.

Zaw Htay, a member of the Advisory Committee on Information Office of the State of Myanmar, told the country's media that the formation of new committees of inquiry is ongoing.

The committee was formed after the formation of the Advisory Committee on Augustus Rakhine ago, under former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who recently expressed deep concern over the violence.
